I spent Sunday burning some old brush piles in our field along side the river.  What a beautiful day, it felt good to lie on the dead dry grass for a break throughout the day.  The air smells different than a week ago.  Feeling more like Ice out.  Flocks of ducks are flying over now, they have been for about a week or so.  Lynn and I get a kick out of watching the wood ducks from our kitchen window lap the yard like F-16’s.  They don’t slow down a bit when they dive into the dead poplar on the edge of the clearing.  The ducks, along with me, are eagerly waiting for the lakes to open up, so they can claim their breeding turf and I can catch a mess of fish for dinner.

Wood is pretty scarce around the wood stove now, it has been a long winter but we have made it by the skin on our teeth.  Time to pick up all the stuff lying around the yard and burn that.  It’s nice to be outside for now.  In less than 20 days the black flies will be back and the beard will have to come off!  


Time to start checking brooks at night for smelt it’s a still night, I can hear the peepers and woodcock for the first time.  The spring spawn has officially begun.


The Magalloway is starting to warm up- 38 degrees.

 
Abbot Brook let go the beginning of last week and lasted about 5 days. The cold nights, warm days, and run-off moved the fish around the river a bit.  I had a couple really good days last week landing one Brookie around 20”, along with many more.
